Geoffrey of Monmouth at Tintern Station
Geoffrey of Monmouth at Tintern Station
In the grounds of the former Tintern Station on the alignment of the old railway line were a number of wooden sculptures commemorating some of the key figures in the history of Wales - the so-called circle of legends. This is a depiction of Geoffrey of Monmouth who was born at Monmouth Castle around 1100. He moved to Oxford and in 1156 became Bishop of St Asaph. He is most remembered as a historian writing the 'History of the Kings of Britain' which set the foundations for the glorification of King Arthur.
