Former council boundary stone near Werrington
Former council boundary stone near Werrington
This council boundary stone is located on Hurn Road between Werrington, a northern suburb of Peterborough, and the village of Marholm (pronounced locally as Marram). Hurn Road was effectively split into two when the former railway level crossing on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) was closed to motor traffic in the 1990s.
The stone was erected in 1929 and denoted the boundary between the City of Peterborough and the former Peterborough Rural District Council (PRDC) area.
The borough boundary was extended to include Werrington, originally a separate village, with effect from April 1st., 1929. The Peterborough Rural District was created in 1894 and was abolished in the major local government reorganisation which was introduced in April 1974.
