The old Church of St Martin was originally larger than this, being the parish church for Brampton. The population shifted, and in 1789 a new church was built in the town centre (replaced by the current church
Link in 1878). The tower and nave of the old church were demolished, and today only the 12th century chancel remains, with a porch added in 1861.

The moles have been busy in the churchyard, which has been closed to new burials since the 1960s.
