A frosty afternoon at Brampton Old Church
The old Church of St Martin was originally larger than this, being the parish church for Brampton. The population shifted, and in 1789 a new church was built in the town centre (replaced by the current church Link in 1878). The tower and nave of the old church were demolished, and today only the 12th century chancel remains, with a porch added in 1861.
Brampton Old Church is a Grade II* listed building - see Historic England for details LinkExternal link . The list entry says that interior furnishings were removed in 1978, but nowadays there are pews, tables and other items inside.
There was a Roman fort at this location, the site is a scheduled monument LinkExternal link .
The moles have been busy in the churchyard, which has been closed to new burials since the 1960s.
