This spherical lump of polished granite, weighing around one ton, is not in direct contact with solid ground. Instead, the sphere rests on a film of water pumped into the socket in which it sits. As a result of the large mass and low friction, the sphere can be spun by hand and thence continues to spin for a considerable length of time.
