The Barony A-Frame
The Barony A-Frame
An unusual view of the A-Frame with the vehicles in the foreground giving some sense of scale.
Barony Colliery opened in 1906 and closed down in 1989 with the towering A-frame restored as a memorial to the mining industry which once was the main employer in this area. The former Barony Power Station, built during the 1950s, was located immediately to the west of the colliery. The plan was to produce electricity by burning coal slurry from nearby washing plants, which also would remove the coal bings from the surface. The huge Barony bing proved to be unsuitable and the power station was closed in 1982. No old buildings remain there.
