Geograph - photograph every grid square

This London North Eastern Railway (LNER) Azuma electro-diesel multiple unit was spotted at Peterborough Station. The trains, which are designated as British Rail Class 800 and were launched by Hitachi in 2014, are designed to be powered either by an external electricity supply on electrified tracks and by on-board diesel engines on non-electrified sections. This particular example was seen in January 2019 and was presumably on a test run as LNER's fleet of Azuma trains was scheduled to enter service on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) later that year.
Peterborough Station, which is viewed here from Crescent Bridge on Thorpe Road, was originally built by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) and opened in August 1850. It was known as Peterborough North from 1923 until the closure of the city's former East station in 1966.
Extensive modification to both the buildings and track layout at Peterborough Station was undertaken during the 1970s and in 2013 and 2014. At the time of writing, services to and from Peterborough were operated by LNER, Great Northern, CrossCountry, East Midlands Trains and Greater Anglia.
