Memorial trough, Rickerby village
The inscription on the trough says "In grateful remembrance of Priscilla Hannah Johnston of The Beeches Rickerby and of her work for animals here and in distant lands. Erected by friends and neighbours 1913". Priscilla (1842-1912) was a remarkable woman who spent several years in the Balkans working with refugees. In Carlisle she continued with philanthropic work, and helped to set up the local branch of the RSPCA.
