Path under the Castleford Viaduct, RSPB Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve
A railway viaduct crosses the Aire and Calder Navigation near RSPB Fairburn Ings Nature Reserve and Bulholme Lock. It was constructed in the 1870s as part of the Castleford to Garforth line. The line closed to passengers in 1951 and as a through freight route in 1969. The line between Castleford and Ledston, including the viaduct, remained in use for coal traffic until the 1990s.

The viaduct is in very poor condition and is heavily corroded. The permissive path beneath the viaduct has been moved closer to the river and protected by plywood and scaffolding.

Former Castleford to Garforth railway, by Fairburn Ings :: SE4327
The former line from Castleford to Garforth is accessible from Ings Lane by Newton Lane Pond, and from the north end of the bridge over the River Aire, where a small path leads up from one of the main paths of RSPB Fairburn Ings. The line is not marked as a public path, but is evidently used occasionally. In late March 2016 there was evidence that somebody had been cutting back bushes recently. The ballast is still in place, with many sleepers, and a substantial part of the rails as it approaches the bridge, but it is all overgrown. There are opportunities to look down at the lakes of Fairburn Ings.
