Acton Main Line station 1980 with marshalling yard
This photo from 1980 shows many parallel rail tracks, and goods wagons on them close to the passenger platforms. In 2019 some of this land is being used for Crossrail works, some is being used for storage of stone, with a few rail tracks for the wagons bringing stone.
Acton History website LinkExternal link tells us: "Junctions with a number of other railways in the vicinity of Acton lead to the development of a large marshalling yard at Acton where trains were re-ordered for their onward journeys, a role still key to the efficient transportation of stone from Somerset quarries to many terminals in the London area."
