West Harbour Road, Cockenzie
West Harbour Road, Cockenzie
The road has now acquired tar - it was previously an unsealed potholefest. The boatyard has now been replaced by flats and the lockups on the right have become a museum.
The road is a historic monument as it is the trackbed of one of the World's first railways which opened in the early 18th century. Waggons like the replica in the photograph brought coal down by gravity from Tranent and the empties pulled back up in short trains by horses. The waggons were manned and you can see the wooden brake on the nearest wheel - terrifying. This waggon was built from the shed wood which turned up in great quantities on the beaches of East Lothian (and elsewhere) at the end of February 2018.
