South side of chapel of St John the Evangelist, Skipton Castle
The 13th century chapel at Skipton castle fell out of use around the time of the English Civil War and was later used as a coach house and then a farm building.

The original south doorway is the lower left. Alongside is a large arch, later infilled, with a smaller doorway, perhaps of 18th century date. The small doorway to the upper left would have led to an upper gallery, accessed by external steps abutting the bailey wall. There are also other windows and openings dating from its later life as a farm building.

The castle was originally a motte and bailey castle built in 1090 by Robert de Romille. In 1310 Edward II granted the castle to Robert Clifford who was appointed Lord Clifford of Skipton and Guardian of Craven.
During the English Civil War the castle was the only Royalist stronghold in the north of England until December 1645.
