Oratory Church, Plough & Harrow Road, Birmingham
The domed building is the Roman Catholic church of the Birmingham Oratory, a community of priests and lay brothers founded by John Henry Newman in 1849. The present church dates from 1910 and has been built in the baroque style and serves both the Oratory community and as a parish church.

Oratories are separate religious communities within the Catholic Church which are not part of a monastic order. Members do not take vows.

John Henry Newman (born 1801) was an Anglican priest from Oxford who converted to Catholicism and was ordained again as a Roman Catholic priest in 1847. He founded the Birmingham Oratory and lived there for most of the rest of his life. He was created a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in 1879 without being ordained a bishop. It has been announced that he will be canonised (i.e. declared a saint) later in 2019.
