Blue Plaque on the Metropole Hotel
Blue Plaque on the Metropole Hotel
Erected by Leeds Civic Trust, this reads
"Hotel Metropole. This fine hotel designed by Chorley, Connon and Chorley is one of the best examples of terracotta work in Leeds. A remarkable feature is the large stone cupola taken from the town's fourth White Cloth Hall (erected in 1869) which formerly occupied this site. Opened 1899"
The Metropole Hotel, King St., Leeds

Completed in 1899 on the site of the 4th version of the White Cloth hall, from which the Cupola was retained. The Metropole is clad in Terracotta made by J Edwards at the Rhos Glazed Brick and Trefynant Fireclay Works, Pen-y-bont.

Currently run by PH hotels and branded "The Met" the name is due to change again in a few months, extinguishing all reference to the Metropole. But the name on the frontage cannot be removed, as this is a grade II listed building (LinkExternal link )

King Street, Leeds

The 4th White Cloth Hall was a market for the sale of undyed cloth on King Street.

The 4th White Cloth hall was built in 1868 by the North Eastern Railway company to replace the 3rd White Cloth Hall that they had to partly demolish in 1865 to build the North Eastern Viaduct to access the New Station.

The building did not last long, due to the decline in cloth manufacturing in Yorkshire. It was never fully used, and was demolished in 1895. Today the site is occupied by the Hotel Metropole. The cupola survives, incorporated onto the hotel roof
