Battle of Britain 4-6-2 Pacific class locomotive no. 34081 on the Nene Valley Railway
The ex-British Railways Bulleid Battle of Britain 4-6-2 Light Pacific class locomotive no. 34081 - "92 Squadron" - is seen here shortly before entering Overton (formerly Ferry Meadows) station. It was built at BR's Brighton works and entered mainline service in September 1948.
No. 34081 was withdrawn from mainline operation by BR in August 1964 and was later sold for scrap. It was acquired by its current owner, the Battle of Britain Locomotive Society (BBLS), in 1973. The locomotive was transferred to the Nene Valley Railway (NVR) for restoration in December 1976, with the work being completed in 1998. After operating on a number of heritage railways, no. 34081 commenced an overhaul at the North Norfolk Railway (NNR) in 2008 and re-entered service on the NVR in February 2017.
The NVR was opened by the Peterborough Railway Society (PRS) in 1974. It began operating passenger services in June 1977 and now ranks as one of the United Kingdom's leading heritage railways. The seven-and-a-half-mile route runs between Peterborough Nene Valley and Yarwell Junction. The NVR is a popular venue for location filming and has appeared in the James Bond movies "Octopussy" and "GoldenEye" and the BBC television drama series "Secret Army" and "Casualty" amongst others.
