Buttway Lane is a minor road leading into the village of Cliffe, on the Hoo Peninsula.

It is on the route of National Cycle Network route 179 "The Heron Trail", formerly designated as regional cycle route 18.
Regional cycle Trail 18 (Heron Trail)
This is an 18 mile circular route on the Hoo peninsula, bounded by, the Thames to the north and the Medway to the south. Dickens wrote four of his novels including Great Expectations and Tale of two Cities close by and the area was a popular smugglers haunt. The trail provides a combination of rural and maritime interests, medieval houses hiding behind later facades and spectacular views along the route.
The National Cycle Network
The National Cycle Network is a network of cycle routes. It was created by the charity Sustrans LinkExternal link (Sustainable Transport), aided by a National Lottery grant.

Many routes aim to minimise contact with motor traffic, though 70% of them are on roads. In some cases the NCN uses pedestrian routes, disused railways, minor roads, canal towpaths, or traffic-calmed routes in towns and cities.
Cliffe is a small village on the Hoo Peninsula at the end of the B2100. The village has a long history dating back to Saxon times. It is sited on a low Chalk ridge overlooking the marshes of the Thames Estuary.
