Burnham Beeches, is owned and managed by the Corporation of London, hence the name of the drive and the corporation crest on the board.
Concerned by the unchecked expansion of London, The Corporation began acquiring land in the 1880s to ensure that at least some countryside would remain accessible for Londoners to come out to.
