The Summit
The Summit
There can be no doubt that this must have been quite an achievement for a train load of coal to reach this point from the Durham Coalfields, heading southwest towards Tebay and then on to the steelworks at Barrow in Furness.
The former rail line here was built solely to transport freight, but would often have a single carriage for passengers to alight from on this bleak moorland line. The Summit was a coal and water refuelling point, rather than a station, and a bypass to wait for trains coming in the opposite direction.
