Shelters and Cliff Lift

Whitby Cliff Lift was opened in 1931. It consists of a vertical shaft down from the cliff top through the boulder-clay, leading to a 221ft long pedestrian tunnel out to the beach. It operates from the beginning of May until the end of September.

The shelter is Grade II listed LinkExternal link and described as Edwardian, c1900, restored late 20th century.

The shelter on the other side is also Grade II listed LinkExternal link and similarly described.

A third shelter 15 metres further on is also Grade II listed LinkExternal link but described as Art Nouveau c1914.
