SO4108 : North east wall of Raglan Castle
taken 5 years ago, near to Raglan, Monmouthshire/Sir Fynwy, Wales
Raglan Castle was originally built between 1435 and 1469 - quite late for this style of castle which is more akin to the great Edwardian turreted castles of the previous century. A second phase of building towards the rear of the complex took place between 1549 and 1589.
Although largely ruined the remains are very impressive, and the buildings around the moat and its Great Tower are particularly attractive. The castle has appeared in numerous films and historical TV dramas, such as "Merlin".
The castle is mostly the creation of two Williams. The first, William ap Thomas - sometimes known as the "Blue Knight of Gwent" began the building in the early to mid C15th, but the Tudor style features are the result of modifications and additions made by its second owner, William Herbert. The final changes to the castle were made by the Earls of Worcester who had become owners having married into the Herbert family.
The castle is in the care of CADW Link
There is a very good website about the castle with lots of information and dozens of photographs here Link
