Spot the birdie!
Spot the birdie!
If it hadn't been pointed out by one of the RSPB volunteers, I wouldn't have noticed the peregrine falcon camouflaged against the machinery. See SE3928 : Jib of the dragline, St Aidan's RSPB reserve for context.
RSPB St Aidans

St Aidans is an RSPB reserve, which was opened in May 2013. It occupies the site of the former St Aidans opencast coal mine. The site includes a visitor centre and car park.
The site was owned and operated by UK Coal, who agreed to transfer it to Leeds City Council. The Council intended to lease the site to the RSPB, and public rights of way were unofficially opened on the site in 2012. A visitor centre & car park were opened on the understanding that the site would be handed over. UK Coal went into administration on 9 July 2013, before the site had been handed over. This delayed the handover and meant that RSPB couldn't operate the visitor centre & car park on the site until the situation was resolved.
The facilities have been developed since then and there is extensive access around the site (as of 2018).
It is notable for large numbers of waterbirds in the flooded areas, which in 2018 included 10 breeding pairs of black necked grebes, about a third of the UK population.
