The 'Tivvy Bumper' at Tiverton Station
The 'Tivvy Bumper' at Tiverton Station
By September 1964 this service was just weeks away from closure. It provided a shuttle service between the town of Tiverton and Tiverton Junction station on the main line to Exeter. It was known affectionately by locals as the 'Tivvy Bumper'. Until the previous year there were also trains along the Exe valley between Dulverton and Exeter, with Tiverton being the largest town served. The station has disappeared without trace, this view being from an almost identical point to my own Link

Services were normally provided by auto-trains consisting of a locomotive and a single coach. Class 14xx tank engines like the one seen here were specifically designed for this type of operation on the Great Western Railway. In the distance a larger class 51xx tank engine can be seen shunting freight wagons. Also of note are the signs on the far platform, which were white enamel with blue letters instead of the usual Great Western cut-out wooden letters painted white on a black background.
Auto train

An 'auto' aka 'motor' train, or 'push-and-pull' train ran with cable connections from the driver's special compartment with window at the other end of the train (usually one coach), so that when in pushing mode the driver controlled the locomotive remotely, only the fireman staying on the footplate.
