Westgate Street, Gloucester
Westgate Street, Gloucester
Gloucester's centre is arranged around The Cross, the intersection of two straight thoroughfares running north to south and east to west dating back to Roman times Link . Each of the branches of the cross once led to a gate in the city wall, and the streets are named West-, North-, East- and Southgate Street accordingly. The view here follows Westgate Street outward. In mediaeval times, a row of buildings would have been built in the centre of the street, as indicated by the brickwork pattern in the pavement.

In the background can be seen the truncated spire of St Nicholas church. The church, which is now redundant, was built around 1190. Its originally much larger spire was damaged by cannon fire during the Siege of Gloucester (1643) during the Civil War, when Gloucester was a Parliamentary garrison.
