St Mary's Gate and Almoner's Lodgings, Gloucester Cathedral
St Mary's Gate gives access to Miller's Green Link , the western part of the cathedral grounds. Before the English Reformation, when the complex was an abbey rather than a cathedral, the secular services supporting the abbey (mill, bakery, brewery, stables) were concentrated in the buildings surrounding Miller's Green. The old timber-framed building to the right of the gate is the Almoner's Lodgings. An almoner was a church official in charge of distributing aid to the poor living outside the abbey, hence his lodgings were located on the boundary of the abbey precinct.
