Midford Viaduct - a broadside view from the east
BR Standard 4 80043 (built Brighton 7/52, withdrawn 3/66) heads south across the 8 spans of Midford Viaduct with the 3.20pm from Bath Green Park to Templecombe. On the extreme right Midford signal box can be seen. For a view along the viaduct towards the station see ST7660 : Midford Station & viaduct.
Below the level of the viaduct can be seen the embankment of the GWR's Limpley Stoke to Camerton branch which passed beneath the viaduct. Passenger traffic had ceased as long ago as 1925 but goods traffic, mainly serving the collieries of the Cam valley, lasted until February 1951. The branch is famous for its 'starring role' in 2 films: 'The Ghost Train' of 1931, & most famously 'The Titfield Thunderbolt' of 1952. See ST7660 : Bridges at Midford for a view of a bridge at the far end of the embankment.
