Verse on a plaque at Craigy Bield
The 'Craigy Bield' marked on the map is the setting for the start of the Gentle Shepherd, a pastoral comedy (1725) by Allan Ramsay. An outline of the romantic tale can be seen in the Allan Ramsay Hotel in nearby Carlops.

The path alongside the North Esk here passes several plaques commemorating the work, along with modern signs for easier reading. This one reads:

THE GENTLE SHEPHERD
by Allan Ramsay
Act 1 scene 1
Prologue

Beneath the south side of a Craigy Bield
Where cristal springs the halsome waters yield
Twa youthfu Shepherds on the gowans lay
Tenting their Flocks ae bonny morn of May
