Victoria Dock, Gloucester
Victoria Dock, Gloucester
Victoria Dock was opened in 1849 after traffic had outgrown the capacity of the main basin of the port following the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846. No formal closing date for commercial traffic is reported, but since about 1920 ocean-going ships have tended to be too large to come up the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, and commercial river barge traffic largely ceased by the 1980s. LinkExternal link Nowadays, Victoria Dock is used as moorings for canal boats and as a marina. The large brick buildings to the right are former warehouses. On the left is the sculpture "The Candle" by Wolfgang Buttress (2010).
