To allow access to the lighthouse at the far end in bad weather, a tunnel was included in the original plans for the construction of Roker Pier. Thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Sunderland City Council, the tunnel has recently been restored, and this handsome entrance lobby constructed. There are a handful of guided tours of the tunnel each week, guided by volunteers.
