Looking north, with Type 42 diesel hydraulic D816 Eclipse (built Swindon 02/60, withdrawn 01/72) approaching at the head of the 11.10am from Ilfracombe to London Paddington. It is passing under the B3343 road bridge. This was the first station out of Ilfracombe on the branch to Barnstaple & was situated at the summit of this steeply graded line. Towards Ilfracombe the line dropped at 1 in 36 for 2 miles, in the other direction the line dropped at 1 in 40 for 3 miles. The station & line were opened in July 1874 & closed to all traffic on 5th October 1970. The station building is now part of a housing development, made up of permanent & holiday accommodation, which extends the length of the platforms & goods yard.
