Site of former Open Air Swimming Pool at Dunbar
The first design for a pool here was in the 1880s. A pavilion was built in 1904. From the 1920s an annual gala was held when there were swimming races with clowns and acrobatic divers entertaining in between the events. The pavilion and grassy slopes could hold several thousand spectators. In 1928 a boating pond was added. In the 1930s there was an increase in popularity due to the craze for healthy outdoor living. The architect of the latest pavilion described it as "the most attractive health resort on the east coast if not in Scotland". In the '60s and '70s the pool hosted the popular Miss Dunbar Bathing Beauty Competitions. At the height of its popularity Dunbar had the largest open air pool in Scotland. But tourists decreased when holidays overseas became popular and in the early '80s the pool was bulldozed and dismantled. The pool may be gone but will never be forgotten by the locals and visitors who have all enjoyed it so much. A new leisure pool complete with bubble bed and flume was opened nearby in 1992.
