Hedge to a property northwest of Birling Gap
Hedge to a property northwest of Birling Gap
This hedge was of striking appearance in its composition and new spring growth. With a southwesterly aspect, it has to tolerate chalk soil and full exposure to salt-laden winds off the sea. Species observed were elm, ivy, elder or its perennial cousin danewort, and a form of Euonymus, here and there invaded by brambles and nettles. There was the odd conifer, shredded by wind and unrecognisable.
