The Sword Inn
The Sword Inn
Pub now occupying two buildings in Westgate Street. On the right is no 45, dating from the 16th Century with 18th and 20th Century alterations. The building originally had a gable fronting onto the street, now masked by the 18th Century façade, with the outer "windows" on the top floor being fake. It was once the workshop of a tailor called John Pritchard, who inspired Beatrix Potter’s story The Tailor of Gloucester. To its left is no 43, again 16th Century, but with 19th and 20th Century alterations. This is the original "Sword" known as such by 1680. The pub name refers to a previous owner, Raynold Messenger, who was the City sword bearer. Both buildings are grade II listed - see LinkExternal link and LinkExternal link respectively.

The low building beyond (no 41) is also 16th Century, then no 39 which is dates from the 19th Century with an earlier 16th Century building behind. Both are also grade II listed - see LinkExternal link and respectively.

The taller building beyond, no 37, situated on the far side of Bull Lane, dates from 1898.
