Bridgnorth Station - working the 'box
Inside Bridgnorth Station signal box. This was a guided tour of a live signal box and the signal man is operating a blue lever, which is a facing point lock. Red levers are signals and black are points. His stance suggests he is putting the lever back to its normal position rather than pulling it to its 'reversed' position. Above his hands is the block shelf with its block bells and the indicators for the state of points and signals. We were given a good description of the signal box and the role of the signal man. Have no doubt, this is a very important and responsible job, there is intense training and occasional inspections of performance. It is also quite physical because most of the levers are operating signals and points by wires and rodding. There are one or two with motor actuation and shorter levers. Note that he is using a cloth to operate the levers. The levers are never handled with bare hands. I was allowed a go in a demonstration signal box and the cloth was essential. I've always wanted to go in a signal box.
