Leyland Titan PD3 at Castlecroft
KJA 871F is a Leyland Titan PD3/14 with an East Lancashire Coachbuilders body. It was new to Stockport Corporation in February 1968 as number 71 in their fleet. Bus services in the metropolitan counties such as Greater Manchester were reorganised and Passenger Transport Executives (PTEs) were created to provide local bus services instead. The PTE in Manchester was known as SELNEC (South East Lancashire and North East Cheshire) and it took over operations from the municipal operators in November 1969 with the buses gradually acquiring SELNEC’s orange and white livery. The area covered by the Passenger Transport Executive changed in 1974, with Wigan now being included, due to the creation of the new Metropolitan County of Greater Manchester and, in April of that year, SELNEC became Greater Manchester Transport (keeping the orange/white livery)
KJA871F is preserved in the orange/white SELNEC/GMT colours carrying the GMT fleet number 5871 and the GMT logo on the side. It is normally housed at the Greater Manchester Transport Society’s transport Museum at Boyle Street where it can be seen in this photograph (SD8400 : Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester). On this occasion, however, it was visiting the Bury Transport Museum and is parked in the goods yard alongside the ELR’s Castlecroft Warehouse/goods shed.
