Stoke Gabriel, dam for tidal mill
Stoke Gabriel, dam for tidal mill
When there was a mill here there would have been a one-way gate allowing the tidal mill pool to fill as the tide rises. When the tide turns the gate closes. When there is sufficient head of water between the pool and the outgoing tide, a sluice gate is opened to allow water to flow through a mill wheel. An advantage of this site is that a short dam holds back water in a large section of the estuary.
