Outside Catcleugh 'Black House'
This wooden cabin was built in about 1891 as part of a shanty town called 'Newcastle'. There were originally 47 cabins which housed the workers who built Catcleugh Reservoir and their families. When the dam was finished all but one of the cabins was demolished. The remaining hut was used as an office and store and was finally abandoned in the 1950s. It was restored in the 1980s and is now a visitor centre.
