View east across the Rhiw and Benallt manganese mines
The Rhiw mine (nearest the camera) was on Crown owned land and Benallt on land belonging to the Nanhoron estate. But, during their most productive years, 1914-18 and 1939-45, when they produced 100% of Britain's manganese output, they, and the adjoining Ty Canol and Tyddyn Meirion mines, were worked as one unit. The following link gives a fuller history of these mines.
