Old Coal Mine
Old Coal Mine
The summit of Fountains Fell is covered with old bell pits and shallow grubbings of all kinds; this is the site of a Colliery dating back to the 1760's or even possibly before. This is due to the summit of the hill being covered with Millstone Grit, a felspathic hard sandstone about 175ft thick, this contains 7 coal seams, most are no more than a few inches thick, but two were worth working as they were 2ft 4.5in and 2ft 6in respectively. The coal was used to fire local lime kilns and heat homes on Malham Moor & in Littondale. Some of the coal was used to power the smelt mill at Streets and at Kettlewell. It's peak period being in the early 19thC.
