Carlisle Castle, inside the keep
Carlisle Castle, inside the keep
The keep LinkExternal link has an approximately square footprint and is bisected by a spine wall, leaving two rectangular rooms on each of the four storeys. Originally built around 1200, the roof level was lowered in the 1500s in order to provide space and support for a gun emplacement. The keep also contains a small chapel in the side wall and some prison cells in the basement.
