Worm drive exhibit, Tullie House underpass, Carlisle
The underpass leading to Tullie House museum is decorated with an installation by Gavin Young consisting of exhibits relating to Cumbria's heritage. Among them is this pair of worm drives, which seem to be railway related given the L&NER imprint. They transfer rotary movement around a vertical axis into a rotation around a horizontal one, pointing along the line of sight.
I have been informed that these worm drives are signal wire tension adjusters used to tighten up or slacken off signal wire which can be subject to thermal expansion or mechanical stretching. A long "T" handle is inserted into a slot on the shaft to tighten or loosen the wires.
I am grateful to Nigel Mykura Link and Richard Humphrey Link for dredging up information on this item.
