What looks at first like a butterfly turns out (rather diappointingly) as a pair of dragons. Carlisle's motto is "Be Just and Fear Not". The coat of arms is on an internal stained-glass display in Tullie House. This coat of arms has been used by the city council since 1924, when it replaced two unofficial coats of arms Link usually displayed side by side LinkExternal link .
