Carlisle cathedral
Carlisle cathedral
The cathedral was built in the 1120s by a group of Canons Regular, priests who formed a religious community under the Augustinian rule. In 1133, their prior, Athelwold, became the first bishop of Carlisle and the church therefore the cathedral of Carlisle. In addition to the Augustinian cathedral priory, Dominican and Franciscan friaries were also established near the cathedral. After the English reformation, the monasteries were dissolved, and the cathedral has been run since by a secular chapter Link supporting the bishop.
