Carlisle cathedral, choir stalls
The choir stalls are labelled in Latin to indicate which of the clergy and officers of the cathedral Link sits where. The top four seats on either side Link of the central aisle belong to the Bishop (episcopus), the Dean (decanus) and six other canons. Four of the latter are labelled as canonicus and two as capitularis, i.e. four priests and two lay members sitting on the cathedral chapter. The chapter is the governing body of the cathedral and is chaired by the dean. Further down the choir are seats for other officers of the cathedral such as the Master of the Music (magister musicae) and the chapter clerk (clericus capituli) as well as the judge and clerk of the town of Carlisle (iudex and clericus urbis).
