RAF Culmhead (aka RAF Church Stanton): a tour of a WW2 airfield - Fighter Pen 229 (17)
Part of a group of surviving type B fighter pens in the SW corner of the airfield, this large crescent shape pen has twin bays divided by a central earthwork traverse which has a curved defended wall at its end, facing the airfield. Each aircraft bay has its own air raid shelter. This is but one of a group of five surviving dispersed fighter pens on the south west side of the airfield, all were big enough to accommodate a twin engined aircraft such as a Blenheim. Those featured are identified by their Air Ministry Plan number.
