Vercovicium: watch tower
Vercovicium: watch tower
There were several towers in all four sides of the wall enclosing the Roman fort. Each side had two towers in it, plus an angle tower in the corners. This is the base of one of the towers in the western wall, i.e. facing Roman territory. The trees in the background line Hadrian's Wall outside of the fort.
