Milecastle 37, Hadrian's Wall
Milecastle 37, Hadrian's Wall
Milecastles housed the garrisons manning Hadrian's Wall. In addition, there were a few larger forts such as Vercovicium LinkExternal link which could house more troops and had additional facilities such as a hospital LinkExternal link . Most milecastles also provided a border crossing gate LinkExternal link and were likely to be used as customs posts for cross-border trade. The section of wall between two milecastles was divided into three parts separated by a turret, which would have been staffed by soldiers from the adjacent milecastle.
