Damselfly at Lemsford Springs: Agrion splendens (male)
Sheltering in a reedbed on a dull, breezy May afternoon.
The two Agrion species commonly found in this country - A. virgo and A. splendens - are much larger than the other native damselfly species, and (to my eye at least) pretty conspicuous where present. I don't know what the official view is, but my impression is that Agrion numbers have increased over the last quarter-century - with occasional 'bumper' years.
Hugh Venables assures me that the insect in the picture is Agrion splendens.
