The Grave Of Covenanter John Campbell
The Grave Of Covenanter John Campbell
This stone in Barr graveyard was hard to find because of the growth of lichen and deterioration of the surface. The local booklet on Monumental Inscriptions confirmed that it was the Covenanter's grave. The inscription on the east-facing side reads:
Here lyes the corps of Iohn Campbell who was banished to America for Christís cause in 1683 but by Providence he returned in 1685 and died August 1721 aged 79 years.
Be faithful unto Death and thou shall have a crown of Life.
His children Mary and James were buried here too.
The carved west-facing side shows a winged skull above two faces, crossed bones and a skull.
