Woodland burial site, Carlisle Cemetery (1)
This was the first natural burial ground to be established in the UK. Opened in 1993 by Carlisle City Council, the concept was pioneered by then manager of Bereavement Services, Ken West. The objective was to create a nature reserve, so no headstones or non-biodegradable ornaments are allowed. Instead the bereaved are invited to plant a native tree (usually oak) upon the grave. Brass memorial plaques can be placed in a walled seating area - see

This is the oldest part of the woodland, where snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells flower beneath the trees in springtime. For a view of the ongoing development of the site, see
