This building was originally a coffee house NN0908 : Coffee House, Inveraray and public reading room, built c.1880 for the 8th Duke of Argyll.

describes it as being built by Eustace Balfour, circa 1880. L-plan. Single storey and attic. Rubble; harled front; 1 rendered side; gabled slate roofs; 4 gabled dormers. Ashlar chimneys. N gable curvilinear; panel with ducal coat-of-arms and motto; string course; plaque commemorating Elizabeth, Duchess of Argyll NN0908 : In Memory of Elizabeth Sutherland. S gable plain; decorative skew-putts. Ashlar bay window.
