Severn Valley Railway - No. 2857
Severn Valley Railway - No. 2857
At Bewdley Station. No. 2857 is a 28XX 2-8-0 heavy goods engine. This is a Churchward design and was built in 1918. It was withdrawn in 1963 and sent to Woodham Bros scrapyard at Barry. It was purchased from there in 1974 and arrived at the Severn Valley in 1975. Following the usual painstaking restoration it first steamed in preservation in 1979 but further work was required and it didn't enter regular service until 1985. A heavy overhaul took place from 1995 to 2011. Some intermediate repairs have been required but as of 2019 the locomotive remains a regular performer and in 2018 passed 100,000 miles in restoration (the in service mileage was 1,276,713 miles)
